Finally the cold of winter is leaving us and the sun is coming back! With each day the sun stays out longer, the more excited we get for spring. The freshening showers, blooming flowers, picnics at the park and weekend barbeques. Really the only thing NOT to look forward to is spring cleaning. Although nobody wants to do it, we all need to. It’s time to dig through the basement, garage, and backyard shed to get rid of all the debris, garbage, and clutter that’s piled up since the last big spring clean. Here are a few tips to help it go a little faster and smoother.
Focus on One Area at A Time
One thing that is so daunting about spring cleaning is the sheer amount of stuff to sort through and area to cover. Start by making a rough schedule, it’s best to start with the worst parts first. Before moving onto the next section, be sure EVERYTHING is completed from the previous spot. A lot of time is wasted bouncing around from unfinished project to unfinished project. If you finish one spot to completion before moving on, it gives a sense of accomplishment and motivates you to keep going. Bouncing around makes it feel like nothing’s getting done.
Donate Donate Donate
So many people have an area in their house or possibly even an additional rental locker just for stuff they MIGHT need someday. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in the last year, you probably won’t ever use it. Go through this stuff and donate just about everything. Even if you think it is junk, they will decide that at the donation center. If you get lucky and stumble upon something valuable, take it somewhere safe or sell it for some extra cash.
Do a Deep Carpet Clean and Floor Polish
The winter is rough on carpet and floors. All the moisture, dirts, salt and chemicals from the streets, etc. is all in your carpet or scratched up your floors. If you have carpet stains, you can pretreat them with a pet spray from PetSmart or a stronger more industrial cleaner from Home Depot. Then call in some professionals and get the job done to completion!
